New Year's Resolution?
Only 25% of people stick to their New Year’s Resolution after 30 days.
According to a study done by Columbia University, only 25% of people stick to their New Year’s Resolution after 30 days. Less than 10% accomplish their goals.
Oftentimes, people who fail at following through with their New Year’s Resolution focus too much on the outcome instead of the habit.
Let’s say someone’s New Year’s Resolution is to lose 20 pounds. Well, how will they achieve that? Through diet? Exercise? What kind of exercise? Cardio? Lifting weights? And how often will they exercise? Everyday? 3x per week? It isn’t uncommon for people whose goal it is to lose weight to attempt all of these methods at once, because they think it will accelerate their progress. They inevitably give up.
Sometimes, by focusing on the outcome, the path to achieving that outcome becomes ambiguous and confusing.
Instead, the person who wants to lose 20 pounds should make it their New Year’s Resolution to cut out soda, or walk 10 miles per week, or lift weights 3 times per week, etc. – they should focus on developing a specific habit with zero ambiguity that aligns with the outcome they want to achieve.
The outcome tells you what habit(s) to develop. Focusing on the habit is key.
